DOROTHY DANDRIDGE

Dorothy Dandridge was born in 1922. In 1954, due to her performance in Carmen Jones, she was nominated for The Academy Awards for Best Actress. Under the training of her mother and her mother’s lover, Dandridge had toured with her sister since she was a child to perform song and dance shows. During the Great Depression, Their careers almost stagnated and their mother moved them to Hollywood, where, Dandridge started secondary school.

When Dandridge first performed in the short film Our Gang in 1935, she had very few roles at that time because she refused to play the stereotypical characters in the film. The 1953 film Carmen Jones achieved global success, and Dandridge became well-known to the public. This was an important turning point in her film career. By the early 1960s, her career began to decline and she was in debt.
